The Engineering R&D Institute provides R&D which is of importance to our engineering business at two research laboratories in Futtsu and Kitakyushu, Japan.
Our Futtsu Laboratory is engaged in research on welding, corrosion prevention and material evaluation which are common technologies for our business. As examples, Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd. (NSENGI) has developed automatic welding technology for gas pipelines, stainless steel sheet sheathing technology which enables offshore steel structures to survive 100 years in marine environments, and the evaluation of new steel materials jointly developed with NIPPON STEEL & SUMITOMO METAL CORPORATION.
Our Kitakyushu Laboratory is active in the creation of renewable energies including bioethanol, and we provide clean coal technologies such as reforming, pyrolysis, gasification and improving low-rank coal qualities. We are engaged in the pretreatment, saccharification and fermentation processes for cellulosic biomass, and the drying, carbonization, and control of spontaneous combustion for low-rank coals to be used in power generation. We are also engaged in research on catalyst utilization technologies.
